FINE HALOZE WINES

Haloze produces exceptional wines of various varieties, including Furmint, Welschriesling, Pinot blanc, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Müller-Thurgau. The local wine, Haložan, which is a unique blend of Welschriesling, Furmint and Sauvignon, is particularly popular.

Haloze’s delicious traditional dishes pair perfectly with wine:

  • Haloška gibanica: leavened dough with a filling of fresh cottage cheese.
  • Ocvirkovica: delicious dough with homemade greaves.

Local wine cellars offer guided wine tastings, where they also serve authentic homemade food. Explorers of different flavors can also sample local craft beer, excellent goat cheese and bread baked in a traditional oven.

HALOŠKA GIBANICA – A SIMPLE RECIPE

Make authentic haloška gibanica at home!

Traditionally, haloška gibanica is a savory dish, enriched with aromatic herbs from the home garden, such as mint, chives and tarragon. However, its sweet version is also popular today and is more commonly served in restaurants and cafés.

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 500 g fine flour
  • 20 g yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2–2.5 dl warm milk
  • 3 tablespoons oil

Ingredients for the filling:

  • 500 g full-fat cottage cheese
  • 2–3 eggs
  • a handful of strong flour
  • a pinch of salt
  • sugar (optional)

Method:

  1. Dough: Knead the ingredients until they form a smooth, soft dough. If necessary, add more milk – the dough should be neither too hard nor too soft.
  2. Filling: Thoroughly mix the cottage cheese, eggs, strong flour, salt and sugar (if using) in a bowl.
  3. Roll out the dough on a surface dusted with flour, then spread the prepared filling over it. Fold the edges upwards to prevent the filling from spilling out during baking.
  4. Before baking, brush sour cream whisked with one egg onto the top of the haloška gibanica.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 40–45 minutes or until golden brown.

Haloška gibanica is an excellent dish for all occasions, which can be served as an appetizer, main course, or sweet treat.
